Kids Ask Dr. Lisa:
What causes motion sickness?

Aired on Lifetime Television
Sunday, January 7 and February 18, 2007
Show 401

Kids Reporter Michaela Powell:

My sister's always getting sick on a boat. We want to know what causes motion sickness?

Health Corner Co-Host Dr. Lisa Thornton:

Motion sickness happens because your brain and your body are kind of feeling two different things. Your body feels the motion of the car but your brain is looking at something really stationary with your eyes. So your brain doesn't know what you're doing, are you moving or standing still and that makes you feel a little sick sometimes. Now the best way to deal with motion sickness is to get your eyes and your body back together. So look outside of the car at things going by, you know, play car games like looking at license plates or counting the semi trucks and that really helps and you'll find you won't get so motion sick.
