Dr. Lisa's enlightening conversation about healing from trauma with Dr. Judith Cohen, MD, a specialist in childhood and early adult psychiatry. "Do children experience different traumas differently?" asks Dr. Lisa. "Surprisingly, it doesn't matter except between acute traumas like car accidents, and interpersonal traumas that occur repeatedly like child abuse and domestic violence." "What signs should a parent look for to see if a child is coping after a trauma?" Dr. Lisa asks. "After traumas, children can develop unspecific fears, and it's not obvious. Post traumatic stress can manifest as depression, and behavior problems can also be related to traumatic events," says Dr. Cohen. However, she assures us that children are resilient. "Hope is essential to healing. Most children do recover."
