Kids Ask Dr. Lisa:
Can I Get Diabetes From My Mom?

Aired on Lifetime Television
Sunday, January 28 and March 11, 2007
Show 404

Michaela Powell:

I just got an e-mail from my friend Jordan, and her mom has diabetes. She's wondering if it's hereditary?

Dr. Lisa Thornton:

Diabetes can be hereditary. Heredity is not necessarily destiny. Just because you have something that's hereditary in your family doesn't mean you're for sure going to get it. So in terms of diabetes, the best thing to do is try to eat right, get plenty of exercise, follow your doctor's advice, and if you do end up getting diabetes, remember that it's a disease that we really can manage well. In fact, there are Olympic athletes with diabetes.
