Heartburn can be a nuisance at any time of day. But for many people, the greatest frustration happens at night even if you're taking a prescription. Dr. Lisa discusses what causes breakthrough heartburn, and what can be done to treat it, with Tabarius Smith, PharmD, a Walgreens pharmacist.
Tabarius Smith, PharmD:
Breakthrough heartburn refers to symptoms that happen when stomach acid "breaks through" the prescription strength medication. It often happens at night.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
And not only does it get in the way of a good night's sleep, but lying down actually makes it worse, because the acid stays in the esophagus and not down in the stomach where it belongs.
Tabarius Smith, PharmD:
Right, but there are many over-the-counter medicines that can be used along with a prescription to ease breakthrough symptoms. Also you should avoid eating large meals at dinner. This way your stomach won't be working on that big meal when you go to bed. And by elevating your head and shoulders with pillows when you sleep, you can keep stomach acid in the stomach.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
That's right. And those are such great suggestions. But remember, if your heartburn is persistent or gets worse, it's always best to see your doctor.
