Dr. Lisa Thornton:
There are so many choices when it comes to over-the-counter pain relievers. Today, we're talking about NSAID's with Walgreens pharmacist Mike Fertig. Hello Mike.
Mike Fertig, PharmD:
Hi Dr. Lisa. There are a lot of things our viewers need to know about these medications.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
You're right. First of all, NSAIDS are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen is an NSAID. They're great for treating pain, fever, swelling and inflammation.
Mike Fertig, PharmD:
Right. Now, ibuprofen works great for many people, but there are risks.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Yes, especially for people 60 and over. There's an increased risk of stroke or heart attack and NSAIDs may cause stomach ulcers. Anyone who has had a stomach ulcer or bleeding condition or if you're taking blood thinners or steroids, should not take NSAID products.
Mike Fertig, PharmD:
There could also be some harmful interactions with other medications.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Exactly. NSAIDs can be very safe and effective, but if you're taking other prescription or over-the-counter medications, you really should talk with your doctor.
Mike Fertig, PharmD:
And read the package label for warnings.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
That's right. Always read all the information before taking any medications.
