With so many fad diets, you never know what's going to work and what's not. But the back-to-basics program at Duke University's Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, NC, is one solution that has achieved excellent results for years. "Our approach here is based on the idea that if people will learn and practice healthier habits of nutrition and being physically active in a sustainable way, that will confer powerful health benefits. They don't need to make heroic life changes. They need to make positive changes and keep them up for the long term," says Dr. Howard Eisenson, program director. The typical stay is four weeks during which they spend their days at the center attending classes, taking their meals and becoming more active.
