Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Today we're talking with our Walgreens pharmacist about how to treat sinus pain and congestion.
Tabarius Smith, PharmD:
I have a lot of patients who ask me about pain relief for chronic sinus conditions. Their symptoms usually include nasal congestion and discharge, headaches and tenderness in the face or aching behind the eyes.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
For people who are prone to sinus pain, my recommendations include treating cold symptoms immediately to prevent congestion, drinking plenty of fluids, washing hands frequently, using a humidifier and avoiding tobacco smoke and other irritants.
Tabarius Smith, PharmD:
And there are also many over-the-counter options to help relieve symptoms. Most sinus medications include a decongestant and a pain reliever.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
The best thing to do is see your doctor if sinus pain and congestion continue for more than a week. Depending on the cause, you may even need an antibiotic or other prescription medication.
Tabarius Smith, PharmD:
And just like with any medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects or drug interactions.
