Think back to your pre-teen years. Were you always the girl getting picked on? Or maybe you were the one doing all the gossiping.  Girl world can be a tough place to visit and of course you want to help your own daughter navigate her way through. But before you sit down for some mother daughter talk, there's a few things you need to remember. Always take a deep breath first whether you found out she saw an R rated movie without permission or that the girls are spreading gossip about her. It's important to stay calm and rational. Never parent her in front of her friends.  If she's leaving the house in an outfit you don't approve of, ask to speak with her privately. She's more likely to rebel if she feels she's been embarrassed.  Let her come to you.  Pressing her for information may only push her further away. She may not be ready to talk about her first breakup yet, but she does need to know you'll be there to listen and not judge her when the time comes. School, boys, clothes whatever's on her mind, it's important to her and it should be just as important to you.
