Baby's First Bath: Kids Corner
Aired on Lifetime Television Sunday, April 22 and June 3, 2007 Show 410
After a fun day of play, a big sudsy tub filled with toy boats and rubber duckies, is just what your kids need. But if you have a newborn in the family, it'll be a while before you'll get to fill up that big bathtub. There are a lot of things to keep in mind when it's time for baby's first bath, but there's no need to be nervous. If your little one isn't quite ten days old, it's best to start with a sponge bath. Lay your baby on a towel, keeping her covered to stay warm. A fresh cotton ball dipped in warm water can be used to clean her delicate little eyes. Clean the rest of her with a warm washcloth. Start with the face, then arms, legs, tummy and finally the diaper area. And don't forget even the tiniest of crevices, like those little ears and button nose. When you're all done, pat her dry with a fresh towel and bundle her up to keep her warm. When your baby is two to eight weeks old, she's ready for a small tub. Two to three inches of bath water should do it. Gather everything you'll need beforehand so you won't have to look away from your little one, even for a moment. Clean her just the way you would for a sponge bath, but don't be afraid to add a little splashing. And if the phone rings, ignore it. Don't get distracted. Your full attention should be on your baby. And remember to have fun with your baby. She won't be this little forever.
