Dr. Richard Berger:
Dr. Lisa's Interview

Aired on Superstation WGN
Saturday, January 29 and March 12, 2005
Show 204

"How did you develop this joint replacement procedure which only uses two small incisions?" asks Dr. Lisa. "I have a degree in mechanical engineering as well as medicine. When we put in a new hip socket, it's like building a ship in a bottle. Today, even finger, ankle and wrist joints are being replaced," says orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Berger of Rush University Medical Center. "What is most important about this procedure?" asks Dr. Lisa. "Recovery is very quick and with little pain. Patients can go home the same day and be off medication in a week. In two to four weeks patients can be playing tennis and golfing. This is much quicker than before. But the main thing is that it's possible to get back to a normal life," Dr. Berger says.
