Genetics Revolution: Health Story

Aired on Superstation WGN
Saturday, February 5 and March 19, 2005
Show 205

"Kids who are sleep deprived are often hyperactive, not lethargic," says Dr. Richard M. Kravitz, Director of the Pediatric Sleep Lab at Duke. "Restless sleep could be a sign of something like sleep apnea going on," adds Dr. Kravitz. At Duke's sleep lab, a comprehensive evaluation is done of REM or rapid eye movement, heart rate, chest wall movement and air flow. "Controlling the quality and quantity of sleep affects the treatment of ADHD," says Dr. Kravitz. "Achieving better sleep often means needing a lower dose of medication for ADHD."
