"Menopause is not a deficiency disease. You can take control and be symptom free by using foods to control mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and improve sleep," says Ann Louise Gittleman, doctor of naturopathy and author of Before the Change. "You should curb carbohydrates and try to stick to friendly carbs like sweet potatoes and peas. And hormone friendly protein and fat are very important for stabilizing blood sugar. Add fruits, vegetables and nuts to your diet. Nuts are the perfect snack," says Ann. She also recommends supplements with GLA, gamma linolenic acid, such as black current seed oil or flax oil both of which modulate estrogen. "During menopause and perimenopause you also need more minerals and vitamins. Vitamins B6, C, E, and magnesium are especially important," says Ann. Using diet negates the need for hormone replacement therapy.
