"Why is there an epidemic of millions of acid reflux sufferers?" asks Dr. Lisa. "Prior to 1930, there were few gastro-intestinal problems, but now it's the most common medical difficulty. The huge incidence of obesity contributes to acid reflux. The heavier you are, things stretch and it's easier for the acid to come back up from the stomach into the esophagus," says gastroenterologist Dr. Steven Peikin author of Gastro-Intestinal Health. "What about self medicating with over-the-counter drugs?" asks Dr. Lisa. "This is fine for the most part, but if you have trouble swallowing or have long-term problems, you need to see your doctor," says Dr. Peikin. "How does someone live with this disease?" Dr. Lisa asks. "There are many lifestyle changes you can make such as avoiding classic aggravating foods and not eating several hours before sleeping. For those with EAGER, exertion associated with gastro esophageal reflux, don't eat before exercise and try swimming or a stationary bike which don't aggravate EAGER. There are many positive lifestyle changes possible," says Dr. Peikin.
