Once considered the "fast food city capital," nearly 60 percent of the residents of Owensboro, Kentucky were obese. "If we don't do something for our children's health, then we are shortchanging them down the road," says Greg Carlson, former CEO of the Owensboro Health System. Owensboro brought in Phil Lawler who spearheaded PE4life. "You need to move at a level that is specifically right for you, no matter what it is," says Phil, who believes an active body promotes an active mind. PE4life stresses individual activity and heart health where vascular equipment and heart monitors come into play. Jodi Ekbundit, a physical education teacher in Owensboro, says, "Kids that aren't in shape as athletes can work out and have success." "I can achieve a lot more goals than I thought," says one student. Teachers say they see psychological improvements in addition to physical improvements. These achievements will benefit the entire community.
