"Almost 60 percent of women who should get a mammogram don't. Why don't they?" asks Dr. Lisa. "They're busy and forget. They should not forget early detection is important, but we still need radical changes," says Dr. Susan Love, author of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book. "What do you mean by radical?" asks Dr. Lisa. "We have been doing surgery, radiation and chemo the same for years. We need to do something different," says Dr. Love. "Tell us about ductal lavage," says Dr. Lisa. "Breast cancer starts in the milk ducts. By doing ductal lavage or extracting duct fluid by a simple in-office procedure, we can find cancer cells before they grow up. The goal is to eradicate breast cancer in the next ten years," says Dr. Love. "How can we prevent breast cancer?" asks Dr. Lisa. "If you are premenopausal, exercise is important and postmenopausal women should avoid hormones. We can eliminate breast cancer. We need to rise up together and demand its end not just a cure," says Dr. Love.
