Aired on Superstation WGNSaturday, June 11 and October 15, 2005Show 216
At Columbia University, Karen Muraszko was the first women accepted into the neurosurgeon program. "What does a surgeon need beside a good mind, a good set of hands and a heart that cares?" asks Dr. Muraszko who has all of these qualities and more. She was born with Spina Bifida and still wears a leg brace, but this didn't hinder her from becoming Chair of the University of Michigan's Neurosurgeon Department. Every year Dr. Muraszko leads a team of doctors to Guatemala to tend to the poor, many of whom have Spina Bifida. "I think some of my patients look at me and think if she can do it, I can too," says Dr. Muraszko who is truly an inspiration to many. A woman who needs to give back Dr. Muraszko says, "I feel good when I go home knowing that I've spent most of my day trying to make life better for my patients."
