"You talk about food as medicine. What do you mean?" asks Dr. Lisa.
"What you eat can help reduce stiffness and pain. Some foods can treat symptoms of osteoarthritis if you know which foods to eat and when to eat them," says Dr. John La Puma, internist, chef and author.
"Are there foods that increase inflammation?" ask Dr. Lisa.
"Yes, fried foods and charred foods, especially red meat. With red meat, oxidized, inflamed proteins are ingested and cause joint pain. You can grill vegetables and this doesn't happen," says Dr. La Puma.
"Which foods decrease inflammation?" asks Dr. Lisa.
"The right foods, at the right time. We have a food timing program that suggests different foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Analgesic foods like berries are pain relieving. These kinds of foods and those high in fiber like cereal are good to eat in the morning. At lunch, anti-inflammatory foods such as soy or pineapple or avocado are suggested. And in the evening, omega-3 foods are important. Walnuts and fish like tuna and salmon are omega-3 rich. Remember, food is good for you!" says Dr. La Puma.
Food just might be your best medicine.
