Volunteering isn't just for adults; kids can also benefit tremendously by giving their time and talents to help others. The best thing about volunteering is, it's voluntary. It's not like school where classes and activities are carefully predetermined and planned.
Volunteering gives kids a chance to pick and choose what they like to do, when they want to do it. If they really love animals, get involved with a local animal shelter or humane society. Pets always need lots of special attention and kids love to spend time with them. Hospitals and senior care centers are great places to volunteer. Many have generous recognition programs that honor kids for hours they contribute. Health care organizations often sponsor special events and fundraisers like walk-a-thons and bike rides and food drives. They're always looking for volunteers to help plan and assist staff.
But most importantly, don't forget the people in your own family and community who can benefit from the help of a volunteer. Cutting grass, shoveling snow or house cleaning are all great ways for kids to give their time and make a difference in the life of a loved one or a neighbor.
And why not involve the entire family? Try spending a day each spring cleaning up a community park. You can even serve Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter. Volunteering is a great way to teach your children valuable life lessons. And spend meaningful time together as a family.
