Aired on Lifetime Television
Sunday, June 18 and August 20, 2006
Show 316
Close to home, Leeza Gibbons shares the engaging story of her own father now as caregiver to his wife. Carlos Gibbons, married for 53 years, tells how difficult it has been to see his wife get Alzheimer's. "Eight years ago she started repeating things, misplacing keys, and she was less capable of dealing with reality." Stepping in to fill a void, Carlos had to assume her tasks and became the caretaker. Male caretakers are more and more common according to Dr. Jamie Huysman. He advises, "We need to recognize actually how hard it is and how important it is." Carlos' wife is now in a nursing home, but he still acts as the caretaker and lovingly comes to brush her hair and take her for walks.
