Reading a good book is one of the greatest pleasures of life, and getting your children into the habit of reading has many positive benefits that will last a lifetime.
You can encourage your children to become lifelong readers by helping them create their very own book club. It's easy and so much fun. All it takes is a few friends, a fun place and of course, some really good books. Pick a place in your home that's a little out of the way for your book club to meet—a place where they have space on their own.
You may want to sit in on the first meeting and help them get organized. Choose a leader and create some simple rules to running things smoothly, such as how often the group will meet? When and where and who will lead the discussion?
The best part of the first meeting is deciding what to read. Visit your local library ahead of time and borrow a variety of books that are age appropriate. You can choose all different kinds of books for the club to consider, or one specific style like a mystery, an adventure or fantasy. Or ask the club members which books they enjoy most. Once you have a list of books to choose, pass out ballots and ask each member to choose their favorite three. Then collect and tabulate the results.
Book clubs for kids: a great idea and a terrific way to encourage lifelong reading.
