Jay Hewitt:
Dr. Lisa's Interview

Aired on Superstation WGN
Saturday, September 10 and December 17, 2005
Show 224

"You are a real life hero. You're a motivational speaker, an Ironman triathlete and on the U.S. National Team for the Long Course Triathlon. It's a long way from being in a diabetic coma," says Dr. Lisa.

"Fourteen years ago when I was diagnosed, I didn't know anything about diabetes. After studying the disease, I realized there were things I could control. It's not a life sentence. It's up to me – checking blood sugar, eating right, and exercise," says Jay Hewitt, a diabetic who has beaten the odds.

"How do you manage running and not having your blood sugar go crazy?" asks Dr. Lisa.

"Nutrition and training are very important. I check my blood sugar often with the One Touch Ultra™ – eight to ten times a day. It's quick, painless and easy. Diabetes is your life and you can be successful at it. Take control and avoid crippling complications. It's all up to you. You can't quit," says Jay.
