One thing for sure, kids are like sponges when it comes to learning. They have an amazing ability to absorb and store information. And that ability increases during physical growth spurts. It's during these times that the brains neuron connectors grow at a rapid rate, making it the perfect time to expose kids to new experiences and new ideas.
Kids have a natural appetite for learning and knowledge, and that innate desire can be further enhanced by creating a learning environment at home. One simple but very effective idea is to play mind challenging games at home with the entire family—board games, rhyming games, or even card games.
Reading is another wonderful way to create a learning environment at home. Make it a family ritual with everyone joining in and sharing thoughts and ideas about their book. And don't forget computer programs and the Internet. There are some great age-appropriate educational resources just a few keystrokes away.
Keep in mind that an important aspect of learning is understanding and accepting failure. Don't overreact when your child fails. Acknowledge it and accept it. Dealing with challenges early on increases the odds that your children will overcome them.
Spending more time with your child can have a tremendous impact later on. Kids left alone to sit and watch TV or play video games on their own simply don't do as well. As they grow, children need time and freedom to play and explore sports, music and other activities that require focused attention and discipline stimulate mental development. But don't force children to adopt your own interests.
The very best thing you can do is provide your child with a safe and loving home. If your child knows you love them no matter what, chances are they're going to grow up more secure and confident and be more open to learning new and interesting things.
