It's tempting to bring along everything but the kitchen sink when you're packing for a trip with the kids. But if you're traveling by plane, the rules limit you to only a few items onboard. So here's how to plan carefully for that carry on.
Start by making a checklist of essential items that must be kept with you at all times. Like any medications your child might need. Keep an "in case of emergency" list of doctors and contacts on hand. And give a copy to your travel partner.
A compact first aid kit is a great idea no matter how you decide to travel. And in case you and your child become separated, a color photo will help others to find her.
Pack a few extra snacks in resalable plastic bags. Juice and liquids are now okay to bring on an airplane as long as you bought them past the security check. Keep a sweater or small blanket on hand in case it gets chilly. Games and toys will also help to pass the time.
Storing it all in a backpack will free up your hands so you can keep track of more important things and it gives you easy access once you're onboard. And if you just can't fit it all into one bag, let your child take along a small backpack too. Remember, if you're not sure you can bring something onboard, check with your airline before you start packing.
