It may look and taste delicious, but have you ever wondered how the food you prepare at home or enjoy in a restaurant got there? "The average food travels 2,500 miles before we put it into our mouth," says author and locavore supporter, Gary Paul Nabhan. Locavore is a way of living and eating that focuses on consuming foods harvested within an area no more than 100 miles from home. That means more gardens, local ranches and farms even food foraged from the wild. Nabhan suggests you grow plants in window boxes, shop at local farmers markets, and ask your grocery store to stock more local foods. ChefMD™ John La Puma, MD, says, "Local food is almost always fresher and fresh food does taste better." Eating locally, says Nabhan, will keep a bigger percentage of the money you spend in your local community. And the fewer miles food has to travel translates into energy savings.
