Owning a pet is a great way to teach your kids responsibility. Research shows that kids who grow up with pets are less likely to be asthmatic, can have higher self-esteem, and are more likely to be kind to other children. The trick is deciding on the right pet for your family. First, as a family, decide what type of pet works for your lifestyle and your home. An energetic dog might be great for a family with a big yard and the love of the outdoors. But for a quieter family with a smaller home, a lap cat might fit in a little bit better. Whether you've decided on a dog or an iguana, you'll need to know how to take care of it. Research the animal with your kids and talk about what chores will need to be done. Make sure to buy all the supplies, food, toys, or anything else you might need before you bring your pet home so you're ready for anything. When it comes time to pick out your pet, consider adopting a cat or a dog from a shelter. Many shelters have a variety of homeless kittens, cats, puppies and dogs. Baby animals are usually more work, so don't forget to consider older animals who are usually housebroken and sometimes even trained. Having a pet is a big commitment, but if you take your time when picking the right pet, he'll feel like another member of the family.
