Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Has this ever happened to you? You're away from home, you get a splitting headache. You reach into your purse for a pain reliever and then you realize there's nothing to swallow the pills with.
John Jenkins, RPh:
This is good news because a lot of pharmaceutical companies are now making medications easy to take in chewable or fast-dissolving formats.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Right. You know this is great for my pediatric patients. And it's also a real benefit for older people who have trouble swallowing.
John Jenkins, RPh:
Exactly. Many OTC medications for seasonal allergies, diarrhea and heartburn now come in chewable forms or in strips that dissolve quickly on your tongue.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
And for people who take medications for migraines, there are dissolvable pills and nasal sprays. These are great improvements especially for people on the go.
John Jenkins, RPh:
Remember, you should always talk with your doctor and pharmacist about the correct way to take medications—both over the counter, and prescription, and ask about fast dissolving and chewable options. They may be just the thing you need for that headache when you're on the road.
