Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US, but did you know your oral health may impact your risk? Joining me now is Walgreens pharmacist, John Jenkins with more.
John Jenkins, RPh:
That's right. In fact there's new research that suggests a possible link between oral health and heart disease risk, possibly due to bacterial inflammation from gum disease.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
So having healthy teeth and gums can be good for your heart, but good oral health involves a lot more than just brushing.
John Jenkins, RPh:
Absolutely. In addition to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, you should also floss every day. Brushing and flossing remove plaque which, if not removed, combines with sugars to form acids that lead to tooth decay. Bacterial plaque also causes gingivitis and other periodontal diseases.
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
Yes, and you should also use toothpaste and rinses that contain fluoride. Fluoride strengthens developing teeth in children and prevents tooth decay in both children and adults. An antiseptic mouthwash can also help reduce bacteria that could lead to gum disease.
John Jenkins, RPh:
And you should also see your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings. Talk with your dentist about the frequency that's best for you.
