More Than a Handful: Caregivers

Ask any mom: three boys are way more than a handful. But imagine that all three have special needs. Melissa doesn't have to imagine—that is her life. "My youngest, Logan, is a little bit more severe. He only has 60 percent of the normal functioning airway as well as feeding tubes. He is very loving, caring and he just adjusts to everything so well," says Melissa. It's been a challenge to care for three children with special needs, but Melissa also loves those special moments with her sons. She says, "It's totally been an emotional roller coaster. But yet, they're all special and they're unique in their own way." Dr. Jamie Huysman says, "Every special needs family I work with has this tender love, this connection where they say 'I wouldn't change my life for anything.' They've gone through so much to get to this point, and somehow or another they have fabulous gratitude."
