When Old Man Winter greets us, temperatures plunge -- and so does moisture in the air. That's an unhealthy combination for skin, especially the soft, delicate skin of a baby. Many moisturizers adults use contain fragrances or alcohol, which actually dry out baby's skin -- so use products designed specifically for young skin. Vitamins A and D in lotion help to further relieve and prevent dry skin. If lotions don't seem to work well, look to creams or ointments to help lock in moisture and promote healing of chapped or cracked skin. These work especially well after a bath, and can be extra soothing to baby if delivered with a gentle massage, which helps both of you get a good night's sleep. A humidifier or vaporizer in baby's room will also help with moisture; and don't forget to bundle baby up from head to toe when going outside in the cold: hat, scarf, mittens… the works to keep baby protected.
