Managing Juvenile Diabetes:
Health Story

Aired on Lifetime Television
Sunday, January 6 and February 17, 2008
Show 501

At only age three, Colin Bertrand deals with something many adults have trouble with—managing diabetes. Diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when he was 18 months old, Colin is thriving thanks to attentive care from parents Brodie and Rachel. They had to learn how to care for Colin's condition, which includes an insulin pump attached to his abdomen, monitoring his blood glucose levels six to 10 times a day, and giving him three shots every day. Each year, more than 13,000 kids in the US are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. The warning signs are difficult to spot for any parent. To help find a cure, the Bertrands recently participated in Chicago's annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk with thousands of others.
