What goes through your mind when you have a hospital stay coming up? The mere thought of the hospital leaves many of us apprehensive – or terrified. But you can take control of your hospital visit by following some tips. First, get as much information as possible about the hospital. Go online to find out about parking, visiting hours, and what to bring. At the hospital, keep a running journal of everything happening to you, and write down any questions you may have. If you take medications at home, let the staff know about it. Ask about any medications they give you at the hospital, too. Why are you on a certain drug? What is it for? The more you know about what you're taking, the better off you'll be. Cleanliness is very important—don't be afraid to ask anyone working with you at the hospital if they've scrubbed up beforehand, and wash your own hands as frequently as possible. Attitude is important, too – a positive attitude for you and those who visit will help the experience. If you have a concern, let them know. Hospitals are there to serve you. Finally, have someone come with you. An advocate with an extra set of eyes and ears can help tremendously.
