Poison Prevention: Kids Corner
Aired on Lifetime TelevisionFebruary 24 and April 6, 2008Show 507
Approximately 9 out of 10 poison exposures occur in the home, most of them involving children. Safe Kids Worldwide has some critical rules that every home should follow to keep your kids safe. First, having childproof locks on cabinets and doors. And not just in the kitchen or bathroom – check your basement and garage for hazardous items and lock them up, too. Second, never swap or combine containers and never leave medicines where your child can reach them. If they do accidentally swallow something, the proper label is essential when determining what to do and for calling the Poison Control Center. Third, know what items are potentially poisonous – even mouthwash can be dangerous if swallowed in large amounts. Many common household plants can cause harm, too, if eaten. Some poisons can't be seen or even smelled. Be sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in every level of your home, including outside the sleeping areas. If your home was built before 1978, have it tested for lead-based paints. Remember to teach your children that curiosity is good for them, but so is staying safe. Just make sure you keep potential hazards out of reach.
