Believe it or not, the idea of baby shower dates back over 2,000 years. Women gathered to give the expectant mom hand-made blankets, clothes and cloth diapers. And although games, favors and foods have been added over years, one thing remains the same: practical gift-giving for mom. Stuffed teddy bears or toys are always a cute idea, but when a new mom is preparing for baby, what she really needs is essential supplies. So, try making your own gift basket. Load up a hamper or laundry basket with diapers, new baby clothes or pacifiers. For a bath time theme, gentle shampoos, soaps and lotions made specifically for baby are essential for keeping baby's skin clean and soft. A travel size pack of the same items is a great idea for that busy mom on the go. Helping baby get a good night's sleep is important to a new mom, so help her prepare with a supply kit of gentle lotions, massage gels for baby, even a bedtime storybook. And don't forget about mom – she'll appreciate a few stress-relieving treats especially for her—like chocolate!
