Umbrellas, boots, hats, shovels… we all know the essential items for all types of weather. But what if that unassuming rainstorm suddenly turned into a weather emergency? Your family should prepare a weather emergency kit. An emergency kit should include a three-day supply of six parts: water, food, first aid, clothing and bedding, tools and special needs items, such as prescription medications. One gallon of water per person per day will be enough for drinking, cleaning, and food preparation. Food items should be non-perishable and require little or no cooking, like canned fruits, vegetables and meats. Bottled juices and comfort foods are also a good idea for your family. A first aid kit should be kept in the home and car at all times. Include band-aids, gauze, antiseptics, pain relievers, cold packs, tweezers and scissors. Everyone in the family should have at least one change of clothing in the emergency kit. Blankets are also an essential item for all weather – so are mess kits, batteries, waterproof matches, flashlights and other tools you might take on a camping trip. If you have an infant or an elderly person in your family, make sure to include items for their needs.
