Boiling water, electrical shocks, even household chemicals can cause burns. While major burns and significant burns to your face, hands or feet require immediate medical attention, most minor burns can be treated at home with a few simple steps. First, cool the burn gradually by running room-temperature water over it – don't use butter or oil, which can actually cause more damage to the skin. After running water over the burn for about 15 or 20 minutes, gently apply a cream or ointment such as aloe vera gel or antibiotic ointment – this continues to cool the burn while soothing any pain. Then, wrap the affected area in sterile gauze bandages or with a dry non-stick bandage. Remember that burns may itch while they heal, but try to avoid scratching them. Over the counter pain relievers can help ease any additional discomfort.
