Earaches: What to Look For

Aired on Lifetime Television
May 18 and June 29, 2008
Show 513

Ear infections are very common in children. Kids get colds frequently, up to 7 to 10 times per year, which can each contribute to the development of an ear infection. Children are even more likely to develop an ear infection if they live in a home where they're exposed to cigarette smoke. Parents should note that most children with an ear infection will complain of ear pain or discomfort. Also look for unusual fussiness, trouble sleeping, fever, loss of balance, and difficulty or decreased hearing. Young children may tug or pull at the ears. One of the worst things about ear infections is the pain they cause, but there are drops your doctor can prescribe to ease the pain. Antibiotics may be needed, so check with your health care provider to see what the best course of treatment is for your child.
