Kids Ask Dr. Lisa:
Why Doesn't a Hair Cut Hurt?
Aired on Lifetime Television for Women
Sunday, September 10 and December 17
Show 324
Michaela Powell and Alex Smith ask Dr. Lisa:
If my hair is a part of my body, then why doesn't it hurt to get a hair cut?
Dr. Lisa answers:
The simplest answer is hair cuts don't hurt because your hair isn't alive. Hair is made out of a protein called keratin. It's the same thing found in your fingernails. The actual hair is dead but the root isn't. The root of your hair is what's inside your skin in tiny holes called follicles. This is the part of your hair that's alive and growing. So if you pull out the hair by the roots, it hurts. But a hair cut? No problem.
