Mel Goldstein, chief meteorologist at WTNH Channel 8 in New Haven, CT, believes every day will be sunny and bright. "I don't think past the two-day forecast," he says. Ten years ago, Mel was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a disease in which the body makes too many plasma cells. Chemotherapy is the standard treatment, but the side effects can be devastating. Mel's oncologist-- Kenneth C. Anderson, MD, at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston-- prescribed an innovative treatment called targeted drug therapy. "Targeted drug therapy only hits the cancer cells and spares the healthy ones," he says. "I have never felt better since beginning this treatment," Mel says.
