Medicines save lives, and help us live longer and better. But for medicine to be safe and effective, you need to take the right amount. And that's especially true for children. Proper dosing starts with knowing the height and the weight of the patient. Children metabolize drugs differently than adults, so you should never assume that half the adult dose is right for kids. You should also consider the symptoms when determining the right dose. You may need to take more ibuprofen for muscle or joint inflammation than you would for a headache or fever. Never take more than directed or for a longer period of time. This could actually make your symptoms worse. For example, taking Sudafed or using nasal sprays for more than a couple of days can cause rebound nasal congestion. If you take prescription medications, always talk to your pharmacist before buying over-the-counter medication, vitamins, or herbal supplements. They can have a negative effect on the medications you're currently taking. Talk to your pharmacist for more advice on correct dosing.
