Aired on Lifetime TelevisionSunday, February 1 and November 5, 2006Show 306
"When a woman is pregnant, the discrepancy between what is expected and reality are night and day," says Dr. Valerie Davis Raskin, psychiatrist and author. Although Carol Blocker's daughter appeared to have a dream life, she suffered postpartum psychosis, a very severe form of postpartum depression. According to Dr. Nada Stotland of the American Psychiatric Association, "Depression interferes with sleep, appetite, and mood. The new challenge is getting women screened. Depression is treatable, but tragic if not treated." Carol, who has been working to spread awareness of the signs of postpartum depression, says, "You never know when it will strike."
