Heartburn:No Appointment Necessary
Aired on Lifetime TelevisionSunday, October 15 and December 31Show 326
Twenty percent of Americans get heartburn at least once a week. But did you know heartburn is caused by a lot more than what you eat? There are actually five different leading causes of heartburn. One cause is medications. Taking certain medications-- especially analgesics, glucose lowering medications, and anti-depressants-- can lead to heartburn. Pregnancy can also be a cause. More than half of all pregnant women have acid reflux. And more than half of the people who use proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflux also experience heartburn. This form is known as break through heartburn and it can be treated with over-the-counter products called acid reducers. Also, many diabetics suffer from heartburn. In fact, they have twice the incidence of heartburn than people who don't have diabetes. And finally, there's acid reflux rebound. This could happen after you stop taking acid reducing medications and your stomach starts producing acids again. Fortunately, there are several effective over-the-counter and prescription medications to help treat heartburn. Talk with your doctor and find out which one is right for your specific cause of heartburn.
