Kids Ask Dr. Lisa:
Why Do We Have Belly Buttons?
Aired on Lifetime Television

Show 326
Michaela Powell and Alex Smith ask Dr. Lisa:
Dr. Lisa, we want to know-- why do people have belly buttons?
Dr. Lisa answers:
Good question. When a baby develops inside the mother, the baby needs to get food, oxygen and nutrition. That all happens through the umbilical cord. It connects the baby to the mother, kind of like a life line. Then after the baby's born, the baby breathes, eats and drinks on its own, so the doctor snips off the umbilical cord and what's leftover becomes your belly button.
