Chores: Kids Corner
Aired on Lifetime Television Sunday, March 26 and May 14, 2006 Show 309
Making the bed, taking out the trash, and cleaning the garage. They're all chores your kids probably hate. But they probably will thank you later in life. You're not the wicked stepmother. In fact, you may be more like your kids' fairy godmother for helping them to become better people. And that is backed up by research. According to one study, having kids take an active role in the household starting at age three or four, influences their ability to become well-adjusted young adults. And that is probably where you should start, young. Even little kids can help pick up toys. The smaller your kids are when they begin chores, the better off you will be. Not that they will be excited to do it if you start them young, but they will know what is expected. What your kids don't expect is for their work to be done by you. Redoing a job is the quickest way to lose help. Instead of redoing the chore your way, keep in mind that you need to explain the job more clearly next time. But no matter how great they have performed a task, don't feel forced to pay them. Most experts say allowance should not be tied to chores. A child who does not want to take out the trash, can easily forgo his allowance to skip garbage duty. Now what do you do? Don't forget what happened to Cinderella when she got all her stuff done. After you are through, have a ball. Reward your family with praise, a treat, or maybe a favorite dinner.
