Phil Ramos admits he led an unhealthy lifestyle. Carolyn O'Donnell was just the opposite, exercising regularly and eating correctly. But each of them had a heart attack at an early age. New research says inflammation is to blame. "Inflammation is a hot topic in cardiology today," says Dr. Sharonne Hayes, director of the Women's Clinic at Mayo. "Inflammatory cells help the body heal itself, but they release a C-reactive protein. When this protein rises, it puts your heart under stress and you have more of a risk of heart disease. High C-reactive protein means inflammation in the blood vessel walls," Dr. Hayes adds. "But we don't know if treating it leads to a better outcome," says Dr. Robert O. Bonow of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. What is known is that statin drugs which lower cholesterol and cardiovascular risks, also lower C-reactive protein. Dr. Hayes suggests, "You should have your C-reactive protein measured depending on your other risks."
