A lot of patients ask about getting back to basics with herbs and supplements. The labels say natural. Does that mean they are safe? Honestly, it depends. It is true that herbs and supplements are derived from natural sources, and you may not know that many prescription over-the-counter medications are too. However, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications are regulated by the Federal Drug Administration, while herbs and supplements are not. An herb or supplement can be sold with little or no research on how well it works or on its safety. That is not to say that you can not benefit from certain herbs or supplements. We are learning more about them, but talk to your doctor about adding them to your daily routine. Then come in and talk to your pharmacist. Some herbs and supplements do not mix well with prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. Your pharmacist can check the herb or supplement you want to take against the medications they know you are currently taking. Remember, just because it says natural, doesn't mean it is better. Talk with your pharmacist. We are here to make sure you are taking what is best for you.
