Pedometers: Fit in a Minute
Aired on Lifetime Television Sunday, January 29 and March 12, 2006 Show 304
Most people have no idea how much they walk every day. A pedometer can help you find out. When it comes to health and weight management, many of us are concerned about the calories we consume. But what about the calories we burn, how do you measure that? We like to use a device called a pedometer. A pedometer measures steps. Obviously the more steps we take in a day, the more calories we are going to burn. There is a wide variety of pedometers available. Some measure steps, some measure distance, others will calculate calories burned. We prefer pedometers that are simple, that just measure steps. The more steps you take, the more calories you are burning. Keep it simple. When it comes to price, pedometers are all over the map, anywhere from $3 to $75. You don't need the most expensive, but avoid the real cheap pedometers. They will not last very long. The best way to start with a pedometer is to get an average over five or seven days. Take that average and then add two thousand steps. This should be your first goal. Little steps over time make a big difference. So if you're looking for motivation to get active, I suggest get a pedometer and take a walk.
