Ever had that itch that drives you crazy? Well you are not alone. Itching is one of the most common skin problems. Why are we so sensitive to itches? It's because humans have a specialized and a very sensitive class of nerves called C-fibers, which transmit the itch sensation from our skin to our brain - a sort of express lane for annoying discomfort. Because so many things can cause itching, there are many different over-the-counter products available to treat an itch. There are moisturizers, hydrocortisone creams, topical antiseptics, counter irritants, and the traditional calamine. Calamine is most often used to treat poison ivy and poison oak. To find out which over-the-counter product is right for your specific itch, consult your pharmacist or your physician.
