Kids Ask Dr. Lisa: Why Do I Get the Hiccups?
Aired on Lifetime Television Sunday, February 5 and March 19, 2006 Show 305
Michaela Powell and Alex Smith:
Dr. Lisa, what in the world are hiccups, and why do we get them?
Dr. Lisa Thornton:
I have a great home remedy for hiccups, but first a little anatomy lesson. There is a muscle that is located between your lungs and your abdomen. It is called the diaphragm. Hiccups happen when your diaphragm gets irritated and spasms. The spasms push an irregular breath up and across your voice box and you get that silly hiccup sound. Hiccups only last a few minutes. And everyone has their own home remedy like holding your breath or sipping water quickly or taking a spoonful of sugar. You can also try alternating your breathing patterns to help return your diaphragm to its normal rhythm.
